The 30th Anniversary Article Series presents: Celebrating the Selection Committee Members of Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity

The Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity recently highlighted the vital contributions of three dedicated members of its Selection Committee for the Homebuyer Services program: Arian Joiner, Ryan Feather, and Dr. Elizabeth Freeman. Their insights shed light on the compassionate and meticulous process involved in selecting families to receive the opportunity to own a safe, sustainable home through Greater Fredericksburg Habitat.

Arian Joiner has been an active member of the Selection Committee since 2019. Reflecting on her experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, she emphasized the adaptability and resilience of the committee. “Despite not being able to sit down face-to-face with each deserving applicant,” Joiner explained, “virtual meetings proved just as impactful. We still conveyed that Greater Fredericksburg Habitat remains committed to transparency and honesty throughout the selection process. We value every family who applies and recognize the unique needs each one presents as we consider potential homeowners.” Her dedication underscores the importance of maintaining integrity and compassion, even in challenging circumstances.

Dr. Elizabeth Freeman, who also serves on the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat Community Committee, expressed her deep respect for the careful consideration given to each applicant. She highlighted the significance of the decision-making process, which takes into account not only the applicant’s circumstances but also their active involvement in building their future home. “Every applicant is treated with respect,” Freeman noted. “Many are eager to contribute through sweat equity, working alongside volunteers during the construction of their homes. It’s a life-changing moment for those chosen, and Greater Fredericksburg Habitat does its best to give as many families as possible the chance to live in safe, sustainable housing.”

Ryan Feather, another valued committee member, shared the personal motivation behind his involvement. His journey with Habitat for Humanity began during his undergraduate years at Roanoke College, where he participated in eight alternative break trips to locations such as Columbia, South Carolina, New Orleans, and Louisiana. “What Habitat for Humanity stands for resonated deeply with me,” Feather stated. He has served on the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat Selection Committee for two years, finding the role both impactful and rewarding. “Being part of this process allows me to help others and make a tangible difference in their lives,” he added.

Feather also reflected on how his experiences with Habitat have enriched his personal life. His involvement has fostered new relationships within the community, and he has gained confidence in home improvement projects through his participation in build days. When not volunteering, he enjoys spending time with his dog Jazzy, reading, playing video games, and participating in trips to El Salvador and Peru.

Joiner shared a heartfelt story about her family’s connection to Habitat for Humanity, rooted in her late mother-in-law, Cynthia Jackson. It was her husband’s mother who initially sparked their interest in service and Habitat’s mission during their active-duty days. In honor of her memory, Greater Fredericksburg Habitat has dedicated a section of its ReStore to her. Joiner concluded her remarks with a powerful reminder: “You can say you’re going to do something, but your actions speak louder than words.”

The leadership and members of the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat Selection Committee exemplify the organization’s core values of compassion, integrity, and community service. Their dedication ensures that families receive not only a house but a foundation for a brighter future. Greater Fredericksburg Habitat extends its deepest gratitude to Arian Joiner, Dr. Elizabeth Freeman, and Ryan Feather for their unwavering commitment.
